The Monchhichi History
26 January 1974: Monchhichi is born
A charming pair of Monchhichi was born in Japan. The boy was named Monchhichi Kun and the girl Monchhichi Chan. Monchhichi is a little monkey who stands for happiness and good luck, and both of them adore dressing up, cake and fruit. Japanese lore has it that if you give a pair of Monchhichi to someone you love, they will enjoy a lifetime of happiness and good fortune.
1975–1977: Meeting their best friend, Chimutan
Monchhichi made a new best friend — Chimutan, the sweet little bunny. She is a kind-hearted companion who loves strawberries, dressing up, baking and painting. Her birthday is 3 March.
26 January 2004: The wedding of the century
On their thirtieth birthday, Monchhichi Kun and Monchhichi Chan held a very special wedding at the Sheraton hotel in Tokyo.
30 October 2004: The Bebichhichi twins arrive
A pair of adorable twins, the Bebichhichi, were born. The newborn brother and sister were delivered to their parents by the stork — in Japanese folklore, the courier entrusted with carrying every newborn baby home. The Bebichhichi inherited exactly the same irresistible DNA as their mum and dad.

| Where the name comes from | “Monchhichi” (モンチッチ) is a small masterpiece of linguistic design. It is a portmanteau blending the French mon (“my”) with chichi (チュウチュウ), the Japanese sound for a baby sucking on a dummy — and it happens to sound rather like the English word “monkey” too. Cute, memorable and quietly multilingual, the name reveals just how far ahead Sekiguchi was already thinking about international markets. |
